What is 5-HTP?

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) aka oxitriptan is a naturally occurring amino acid, which is produced by the body from an essential amino acid called L-tryptophan.3 As a supplement, 5-HTP is typically derived from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia.4 5-HTP is also a chemical precursor to a very important serotonin neurotransmitter. Serotonin is best-known as the “happiness neurotransmitter” and it plays a significant role in healthy mental functions, including regulating satisfaction, optimism, mood and behaviour. Serotonin is also required for optimising many other bodily functions and systems, including sleep, appetite and sexual behaviour.1 Therefore, 5-HTP intake leads to increased serotonin levels in the central nervous system (CNS).3 5-HTP users describe its effects as “euphoric” and without providing any stimulatory effects.2

Key benefits:

  • Supports brain health
  • Better mood
  • Improves mental wellbeing
  • Reduces stress
  • Anti-anxiety effects
  • Sleep aid

How does 5-HTP work?

As mentioned above, the primary mechanism of action of 5-HTP in the body is by increasing the levels of serotonin in the CNS. It does so very efficiently and quickly as it has the capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) without the need of a transport molecule.3 This is clearly demonstrated by a high percentage of 5-HTPthat ends up in the bloodstream, which is reported to be around 70% following oral administration.3 In addition, 5-HTP may also increase the levels of other important neurotransmitters, such as melatonin, dopamine, nor-epinephrine, and beta-endorphin.3

Recommended dosage of 5-HTP tablets:

The recommended daily dosage of 5-HTP is 2-4 tablets. Initial dosage is usually 1 tablet taken two times per day with meals. If required, after a few weeks the dosage can be increased to 1 tablet taken three to four times per day with meals.

Side effects:

5-HTP tablets are considered to be safe. However, you should not exceed the recommended daily dosage. Do not take 5-HTP if you are taking medications for depression because this might lead to serotonin levels increasing too much, a condition known as serotonin syndrome.4
