What is Fish Oil?

Omega-3 fatty acids (aka omega-3 fats and n-3 fatty acids) are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). They are considered to be "essential" fatty acids because the body cannot make them, but must get them from food for general health and well-being.3 Fatty acids form integral parts of many body parts, including cell membranes, thereby affecting its function.5

Although, omega-3 fatty acids can be found in different foods, such as fatty fish, leafy vegetables, vegetable oils, and walnuts, essential fatty acids (EFAs) are generally deficient in the modern Western diet.1 Essential fatty acid deficiency is generally a result of low dietary intake, which is associated with a growing number of inflammatory diseases, poor fetal development, general cardiovascular health and risk of development of Alzheimer’s disease.1, 5

However, all of this can be prevented by taking a high quality source of fish oil in a dietary supplement form. Fish oil supplements are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and a growing number of people are turning to them to prevent any deficiencies in their diet.2 In addition, fish oil supplements offer a good alternative for those who do not consume fish.

Fish oil and its two active ingredients - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been widely studied in humans.5 Current evidence shows the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in supporting brain function, normal growth and development. For example, DHA is the most important omega-3 fatty acid in the brain as it makes up around 10-20% of the brain total lipids.6 Therefore, as DHA is found in abundance in the brain and retina it plays a crucial role in advanced neurological functions, such as neurotransmission, neurogenesis, neuroinflammation, myelination and synaptic plasticity.6

Omega-3 fatty acids have a very high biological activity and therefore provide wide-ranging health benefits, including prevention and treatment of various cardiovascular, metabolic (e.g. diabetes), neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases.1 The protective cardiovascular effect of omega-3 fatty acids has been demonstrated in a number of clinical studies.4 Specifically, research shows that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

Another well-established health benefit of fish oil is its anti-inflammatory properties, which provides potential protective effects against many inflammatory conditions, such as atherosclerosis, pancreatitis, arthritis and many more.4

Overall, fish oil has potential anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-depression, anti-aging and anti-arthritis effects and therefore should be taken on a regular basis.

Key benefits:

  • Anti-inflammatory agent
  • Healthy heart and cardiovascular system
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Anti-aging effects
  • Optimal brain functioning
  • Improved mood

Recommended dosage:

The recommended daily dosage of fish oil is between 1000-3000 mg, preferably with meals. A loading phase of approximately 3 weeks is required to achieve the maximal bodily stores of fish oil.

Side effects:

Fish oil is considered to be extremely safe with no adverse side effects. However, the most commonly reported side effect in clinical studies is diarrhoea. Therefore, it is important not to exceed the recommended dosage. Unpleasant ‘fish burps’ are also common, but this can be prevented by taking fish oil capsules with meals.
