What is Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulphur compound found in humans, animals and plants. MSM is used for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.1 As a good source of sulphur, which is a component of cartilage, MSM is a very important nutritional supplement for healthy joints. It is an excellent natural supplement particularly when used with other joint health supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin.1

In terms of its antioxidant properties, MSM has been shown to help manage the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase antioxidant defence (glutathione).7

Key benefits:

  • Healthy joints
  • Anti-inflammatory agent
  • Natural analgesic
  • Helps with digestive problems

Mechanisms of action:

MSM is composed of sulfur, oxygen and methyl groups. It is synthesized from dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and is found in cerebrospinal fluid and plasma in small concentrations.3

Recommended dosage of MSM:

The recommended daily dosage of MSM is up to 3000 mg per day. Therefore, you should take up to 3 capsules of MSM a day. Please note that benefits are usually felt within 2-3 weeks. MSM is water soluble and has a very long half life.

Side effects:

MSM is well-tolerated with no adverse effects.
