Theacrine (1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid) is a naturally occurring pure alkaloid that is structurally similar to caffeine. It is found in different types of tea, fruits and seeds (e.g., Theobroma grandiflorum (cupuaçu)).4 Probably the best known source of theacrine is the leaves of the Camellia kucha plant that has been used traditionally as a “healthy beverage” in many Chinese regions.1 However, now theacrine is also available in tablet form, which is a very convenient way of taking it.
The reported effects of theacrine include increased energy levels, reduced fatigue, higher mental focus, better concentration, stronger motivation and improved mood state.3 Theacrine is a neuroactive supplement that stimulates the central nervous system, therefore these benefits are expected.
It is important to note that unlike caffeine theacrine does not lead to tolerance development.2 Also, theacrine effects are longer-lasting when compared to caffeine, which suggests that theacrine tablets is a great alternative to caffeine as they offer longer benefits without any unwanted side effects that are associated with regular caffeine consumption (e.g., “caffeine crash”, jitters and irritability). The clinical safety and non-habituating effects of theacrine have been recently studied in healthy participants who used theacrine daily for 8 weeks.3 The results showed no negative effects on the standard hemodynamic variables, such as heart rate and blood pressure.3 One of the important findings of that study is no increase in blood pressure following threacrine use because other stimulants often result in higher blood pressure, which is unhealthy for anyone.
Overall, the current evidence suggests that threacrine can be used as a safe alternative to people who cannot use or do not like using caffeine. 3
In terms of specific mechanisms of action, theacrine is not too dissimilar to caffeine as it exerts its effects through two main systems – altered adenosine receptor antagonist activity and dopaminergic neurotransmission. As a result mental and physical energy levels are increased.
The recommended daily dosage is 1 tablet.
A recent study testing 60 healthy participants who were taking theacrine daily for 8 weeks has confirmed the clinical safety and non-habituating effects of theacrine.3 In addition, unlike other popular stimulants, including caffeine theacrine did not demonstrate a rapid onset of tolerance.3
