What is Guarana?

Guarana is a herbal extract from the Amazonian plant Paullinia cupana.1 It has been used in traditional medicine for its preventive, energetic, and healing powers.1 However, nowadays guarana is best known as an effective stimulant found in many energy drinks and energy drink formulations. In fact, around 70% of its production is used in soft and energy drinks.1, 5 This is not surprising as guarana seeds can contain more than four times the amount of caffeine found in coffee beans.2

In addition to caffeine, guarana seeds contain other naturally occurring chemicals that overall provide greater stimulating effects than caffeine alone.2 Guarana also contains a high concentrations of phenolic compounds (tannins), saponins and other alakaloids, such as theophylline and theobromine.2

Guarana is available as a dietary supplement in a tablet and capsule form. Guarana tablets/capsules offer an excellent healthy alternative to those people who do not like energy drinks and/or trying to avoid unnecessary calories often found in sugary energy drinks.

Due to beneficial effects on body weight control and metabolic alterations, guarana has become a very popular ingredient in weight-loss supplements.4 This is attributed to its stimulatory effects. By stimulating the central nervous system (CNS), guarana supplementation may reduce the effects of physical and psychological stress, which has a number of practical implications in many different populations.

For example, a large study in healthy young adults found that guarana supplement has acute cognition enhancing properties.6 This was reflected in improved speed and accuracy of rapid visual information processing task.6 Guarana also attenuated the mental fatigue associated with sustained mental effort.6 In terms of further evidence of guarana’s effects on cognitive functions, some studies suggest that guarana supplementation can improve attention, increase alertness and enhance memory and perception.3 Interestingly, guarana is also believed to be aphrodisiac.1

Key benefits:

  • Reduced mental and physical fatigue
  • Promotes weight loss
  • Enhanced cognition
  • Improved alertness
  • Increased attention
  • Effective antioxidant

Mechanisms of action:

Guarana mainly works by stimulating the CNS. It is important to note that guarana is released slower than the caffeine, providing longer and more sustained benefits.3 Guarana’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can be explained by high concentrations of phenolic compounds and saponins, respectively.

Recommended dosage of Guarana:

The recommended daily dosage of guarana is 1-3 tablets (200-600 mg/day). Start by taking 1 tablet a day before noon and monitoring the effects before increasing the dosage. For most people 1 tablet is enough to observe the maximal benefits of guarana supplementation.

Side effects:

Guarana is a safe and well-tolerated dietary supplement. However, high dosages of guarana may cause insomnia, irritability, anxiety, palpitations and hyperactivity, so do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.
