What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a natural source of curcumin, which is a polyphenol with many health benefits.1 Turmeric is obtained from the plant Curcuma longa Linn and has been used as a traditional herbal medicine for centuries.1 It is still a widely consumed spice in Asian countries and as a herb it is closely related to ginger.2

Its main active ingredient – curcumin is known as the Asian version of aspirin. This multipurpose spice is used in curries, but is also now available as a dietary supplement. Dietary turmeric capsules are used by those who are looking to get a more significant dosage of turmeric.
