Huperzine A (aka HupA and selagine) is a natural alkaloid traditionally extracted from the Chinese herb Huperzia serrata.1 It belongs to the cholinergic class of compounds.2 Huperzine A is associated with improvements in cognitive functions. Its effects are linked with the learning neurotransmitter acetylcholine as it works by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine.2 With higher levels of acetylcholine cognitive processes, including learning, memory and focus may be functioning more effectively.
Huperzine A appears to be a selective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor.1In other words, it stops this enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, which is a vital neurotransmitter. As a result there are higher levels of acetylcholine in the brain. After oral ingestion Huperzine A appears in the blood in around 15 minutes and peaks at around 70 minutes.
The recommended daily dosage is 200 mcg. Huperzine A is water soluble, so it does not have to be ingested with a meal.
When used with the recommended dose, Huperzine A is considered to be a safe supplement. However, high dosages of Huperzine A may result in side effects, including nausea, sweating, dizziness, thirst and restlessness.
