Phosphatidylserine (aka PS) is a naturally occurring phospholipid. Many phospholipids, including PS, make up the structural components of the cell membrane.3 As PS is a building block of the cell membrane, it is believed to be important in cell excitability and communication.1 It is mostly concentrated in organs that require high metabolism i.e., the brain, lungs, heart, liver and skeletal muscles.2 Phosphatidylserine has the effect on the release of three brain chemicals: acetylcholine, dopamine, and noradrenaline.1 Therefore, sufficient levels of PS are critically important for the proper functioning of the central nervous system. In terms of functional health benefits, the supplementation of PS has been linked with improvements in memory, learning, vocabulary and concentration.3 PS may also have an ergogenic effect in athletes by increasing recovery, preventing muscle soreness and reducing cortisol (“stress hormone”) concentrations following training.2
PS is efficiently absorbed after oral consumption and then readily crosses the blood-brain barrier.
The recommended daily dosage of Phosphatidylserine is between 300-600 mg. As PS is a fat-soluble phospholipid it should be taken with a meal. Peak levels of PS are observed 1-4 hours post-ingestion.3
PS is generally regarded as safe when used at recommended dosages. Side effects are rare, but mild gastrointestinal distress may occur.
